Located slightly west of Golden on the Trans-Canada HWY, this course first
opened in 1986 and since then has come into the radar of Score
Magazine.
It recently awarded Golden Golf as the best value
to be found in British Columbia, and put it on the Top 100 list
for courses in Canada. Also, its breathtaking yet uncompromising 11th
hole was rated the best par 4 in the country.
Not only does Golden Golf & CC have 18 holes of superb championship golf, but its ample facilities include a grass tee driving range, a putting green and a beautiful white sand (locally mined) bunker.
The par 72 layout was designed by co-architects Bill Lewis, who did the front 9, and Les Furber, who did the back 9, though their team consisted of far more than just these two men. Dozens of local people had a hand in removing rocks and digging the fairways, and now the community is very proud of their combined 6778 yard accomplishment.
Even though the front and back nines were created by two different designers,
consistency is not a problem. The designers must have seen eye to eye on
their approaches because the whole course flows seamlessly. Right from
the start, the course will try to lull you into relaxing but don't be tricked,
as you'll need to set your sights on the very center of the fairway if
you want to end up in putting distance from the 1st hole. Watch out for
the 7th hole, as this par 3, 32 yard "optical illusion" slopes
down to the right and requires golfers to play long off the tee. Hole 10
is a putters paradise, wind can be an obstacle on the 13th hole, and number
15 is the most challenging green on the course. Pull out your three wood
here, and aim for perfect placement on this 38 yard monster. The 42 yard
finishing hole is par 5, and often the deciding factor in a close golf
match.
You couldn't ask for better mountain golfing than what you'll experience at the Golden Golf Club, sheltered as it is at the base of Mount Purcell and surrounded to the east by a sweeping view of "classic Canadian Rockies"— jagged and gigantic. The Columbia River flows gently alongside the course, while Holt Creek thunders cold glacier water through it, offsetting the naturally serene setting with a bit of the wildness that B.C. has come to be known for. And wild it is! The area simply teems with birds and animals, such as Bald Eagles, White-tailed Deer, and even the occasional Black Bear. With so much water featured on the Golden Golf course, golfers might consider bringing their fishing rods with them!
What you won't need are clubs, as the pro shop rents them to golfers who have come to Golden unprepared, and they also rent power carts. If you choose to walk the course, be advised that the club is a soft spike facility. Come, park your RV on-site, take a few CPGA lessons, dine in the licensed restaurant, and stay for awhile. Golden Golf is worth repeating.
